Everyone admires persistence, except when one persists in error. Bill O’Reilly stands guilty of persisting in error. Last night (19 August), and again tonight, he held forth yet again: Amendment XIV of the Constitution confers absolute, undeniable birthright citizenship on any person born in the United States, except those born solely to foreign diplomats, agents, or (God forbid) invaders/occupiers.
Donald Trump’s immigration plan still dominates the news cycle, more than twenty-four hours later. Yesterday, Judge Andrew P. Napolitano asserted, but did not prove, the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees an absolute birthright of citizenship to any person born on American soil, under any circumstances. Last night, Bill O’Reilly asserted the same thing. (Bill O’Reilly really should leave that to his “Is It Legal?” team.) This morning, former Governor Jim Gilmore (R-Va.) said the same.
Donald Trump broke every rule of business and marketing lately. He told–gasp!–the truth about America’s broken immigration policy. He pointed to the Emperor, as he paraded naked in the public square. And he said, “Go get some clothes on!” And the Emperor’s “tailors” pointed right back at him, and said, “Donald Trump shows himself stupid and unfit for his job!”
Since shortly after Christmas 2014, a grass-roots movement has gained force among Republican voters. They do not want Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) to stay on as Speaker of the House of Representatives. This morning that movement moved from the “just talk” stage to the action stage. Because now, in Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), they have a candidate.
Last month (November 22), Dr. Orly Taitz released a statement few believed at the time. She said Barack Obama never actually issued or signed any executive order granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. Today we have confirmation of that lapse, from a sitting United States Senator.
