A Colorado woman and a teen boy are being hailed as heroes after they jumped into frigid waters to save three children who fell into an icy pond on Sunday.

Arapahoe County resident Dusti Talavera watched from her apartment window as three children who were playing near a pond fell through the ice into the freezing waters below.

Talavera ran outside and jumped in to pull the children out. She was able to pull out a 4 year old girl and an eleven year old boy, but struggled to retrieve a 6 year old girl. A teenage male relative of the girl then jumped in and helped Talavera pull the girl from the pond. The girl was not breathing when she came out of the water.

First responders administered CPR on the girl until she began breathing on her own, after which she was transported to a nearby hospital and listed in stable condition. Later, she was changed to critical condition and sent to Children’s Hospital in Denver, where she is expected to survive.

Talavera said in a press conference on Monday her “Instinct was to go outside and help them.” Local firefighter Cory Sudden told ABC7, “We were back at the fire station talking about how brave she was, how great the officers did. And gosh, I hope if this happened to one of mine, somebody like her was close by.”
