Romney defends Sen. Rounds after Trump calls him a ‘jerk’ for refuting claims that 2020 election was stolen

GOP Senator Mitt Romney (UT) came to the defense of fellow Republican Senator Mike Rounds (SD) after former president Donald Trump sharply criticized Rounds for saying the 2020 election was not stolen.

In an interview on Sunday with ABC’s “This Week,” Rounds said the 2020 election was “fair, as fair as we’ve seen,” and “While there were some irregularities, there were none of the irregularities which would have risen to the point where they would have changed the vote outcome in a single state.”

Former president Trump released a scathing statement on Monday in response to Rounds’ comments, saying “Is he crazy or just stupid? The numbers are conclusive, and the fraudulent and irregular votes are massive.”

Trump continued, “The only reason he did this is because he got my endorsement and easily won his state in 2020, so now he thinks he has time, and those are the only ones, the weak, who will break away. Even though his election will not be coming up for 5 years, I will never endorse this jerk again.”

Coming to Rounds’ defense, Romney, who has been an outspoken critic of Trump within the GOP caucus, Tweeted on Monday, “Mike Rounds speaks truth knowing that our Republic depends upon it. Republicans like Govs Hutchinson, Baker & Hogan; Sens McConnell, Thune & Johnson; Bush & Cheney; plus 60+ courts and even the right-leaning Wall Street Journal editorial page agree: Joe Biden won the election.”

Fellow GOP Trump critic, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, mocked Trump on Twitter after Trump’s statement was released, posting an image of the statement along with the caption, “Awe I’m sorry snowflake. Let’s get you some milk and a blankie:(. Remember, you’re special and everybody knows it!”
