Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tests positive for COVID-19
According to New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s office on Sunday, the congresswoman has tested positive for the coronavirus and is currently recovering at her home.
“Representative Ocasio-Cortez has received a positive test result for COVID-19. She is experiencing symptoms and recovering at home,” the release from her office said. “The Congresswoman received her booster shot this fall, and encourages everyone to get their booster and follow all CDC guidance.”
Just last week, the Democratic congresswoman was seen without a mask enjoying drinks with her boyfriend while on vacation in Miami. Ocasio-Cortez was photographed with her boyfriend Riley Roberts sitting outdoors at the Doraku Izakaya and Sushi restaurant on December 30 sipping on a cocktail.
Her maskless vacation was criticized on social media by supporters of GOP Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. DeSantis has taken a strong position against mask and vaccine mandates.
“Welcome to Florida, AOC! We hope you’re enjoying a taste of freedom here in the Sunshine State thanks to @RonDeSantisFL’s leadership,” read a Tweet from the Team DeSantis account in response to the photo.
Ocasio-Cortez responded to the tweet the next day, saying: “Hasn’t Gov. DeSantis been inexplicably missing for like 2 weeks? If he’s around, I would be happy to say hello. His social media team seems to have been posting old photos for weeks. In the meantime, perhaps I could help with local organizing. Folks are quite receptive here :)”
In a press conference last week, DeSantis mentioned AOC when asked about her trip to the mostly mandate-free state. “If I had a dollar for every lockdown politician who decided to escape to Florida over the last two years, I’d be a pretty doggone wealthy man, let me tell ya,” DeSantis said.
A spokesman for DeSantis said later last month that the governor had been absent for a few weeks because he was taking care of his wife, Casey, who announced in October her diagnosis with breast cancer.
