Gov. DeSantis officially files candidacy to run for Florida governor re-election in 2022

Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) filed his paperwork to run for reelection in 2022. His statement of candidacy became visible in the state’s database on Monday.

Although most people already believed that DeSantis would run for re-election, it is now official. In recent months, he has raised millions of dollars for his political committee, Friends of Ron DeSantis, which currently possesses $60 million. Additionally, he has been speaking as if he were campaigning during his press conferences, which have become more frequent.

So far, 16 people have officially filed to run for governor in 2022, according to the Florida Division of Elections. Among those sixteen are three notable Florida Democrats: State Senator Annette Taddeo, Congressman Charlie Crist, and Agriculture Commissioner and former governor Nikki Fried.

Democrats have not fared well in recent years in the Sunshine State. In both 2016 and 2020, former President Donald Trump has won Florida. In 2018, one of the state’s Senate seats flipped from blue to red, as did the governorship. And in 2020, two House seats switched over to Republican after a short stint as blue seats.

Democrats are confident they will be able to beat DeSantis, especially in light of the way he has handled the Covid-19 pandemic. However, he is currently polling in the number one spot, with a significant lead over his opponents.

Many thought that DeSantis might run for president in 2024, up until recently when he appeared to dismiss that rumor. When asked if he was thinking about running for president, he responded, “I’m not considering anything beyond doing my job… that is way down the road, it is not anything that I’m planning for.”
