Parents group files petition to remove Loudon County school board chair

Parents in the Loudon County School District interrupted a board meeting and informed board members that they were filing petitions to remove the members.

Four Loudon County school board members were reportedly found to be in a private Facebook group that opposes parents who are against Critical Race Theory. Parents have responded by not only starting petitions, but obtaining enough signatures to remove the school board members.

After confronting the board members and informing them that ‘Fight for Schools’, a parent group, had acquired over 2,000 signatures to remove them, the meeting grew chaotic as parents began shouting over one another.

During the public comment period, one mother, Megan Jenkins spoke candidly and directly to the board. “By the way, Denise, Brenda, Ian, Atoosa, we are well over 100% of required signatures for the petitions,” she said. “So I’m not going to encourage any of you to resign because when you are recalled and removed from office, it will be much more satisfying. See you in court.”

The board members she was speaking to were Board Chair Brenda Sheridan (Sterling District), Board Vice-Chair Atoosa Reaser (Algonkian District), Ian Serotkin (Blue Ridge District) and Denise Corbo, the at-large member. The parents had raised 10% of the number of votes each of them got during the election, which is enough signatures to remove each of them.

Petitions began earlier this year after parents discovered the board members were in a private Facebook group called “Anti-Racist Parents of Loudoun County“. In the group, conservative parents and any in opposition to Critical Race Theory were listed by name and “track[ed], hack[ed], and “doxx[ed]”’. 

Other parents spoke to the board at the meeting, as well. “I have the privilege of telling you that we are finished collecting signatures for your removal,” one mom said. She added that the parent group had “sacrificed and spent countless hours” to get the petitions signed.

Another mom said, “You have activist teachers using to indoctrinate their kids who are at the mercy of their authority. That is child abuse. And you have no right to brainwash children into believing that their skin color determines their purpose.”

Should the petitions move forward and lead to court cases, a judge or jury will decide if the board members should be removed.
