Veterans storm the barricades
Thousands of veterans of World War Two and other US wars came to Washington, D. C. yesterday and literally stormed the barricades in front of their memorials. Before the day was out, they literally dumped the barricades on the sidewalk in front of the White House lawn.
Million Veterans March
Organizers held what they billed as a Million Veterans March. No one has made any independent guess of how great a crowd the event drew. But accounts at The Washington Times, Opposing Views, Breitbart.com, Freedom Outpost, and Patriot Action Network put the crowd at thousands. (The Patriot Action Network link includes an Adobe Photoshop product that looks as though Barack Obama, or a cardboard cutout of him, is half buried in a stack of barricades. The barricade stacking did happen, but Obama was nowhere near, nor was any life-sized cardboard cutout of him.)
Republican Senators Ted Cruz (Texas) and Mike Lee (Utah), and former Governor Sarah Palin (Alaska), spoke before the crowd. The crowd raised several chants of:
Tear down these walls!
Shame on you!
U. S. A.!
Convoy!
Fifteen long-haul truckers from the Ride for the Constitution protest drove toward the Mall on 17th Street west. (One unconfirmed report says thirty trucks drove in.) Accounts differed on how close they got before police stopped them. Several accounts said they got close enough to blow their horns to show their support for the veterans.
The Washington, D. C. CBS radio station reported several veterans going to the Lincoln Memorial to tear down barricades there.
Comments left on the linked Web pages told the next part: veterans unfastened the barricades in front of the WWII Memorial, picked them up, and carried them up 17th Street NW to Pennsylvania Avenue. There, in front of the White House fence, they stacked them. And according to Breitbart.com, the Secret Service, and other police in riot-control gear, clashed with the veterans. But reports counted only one arrest, and described nothing more serious than pushing and shoving.
The Park Police put the barricades back in place this morning.
