Why teach creation?

Published

on

Blake's Image of Creation and creationism should be a warning to fools who deny God and His creation narrative. Or those who presume to judge God with theological questions about which they know little themselves. Some dire predictions are also possible today. Creation also answers a great many questions about who we are and where we came from.

Have you ever asked yourself why our culture seems to be disintegrating all around us? Why the moral standards we all had in common a few decades ago seem to have blown away with the wind? The answer may lie in the public classrooms around the world where evolution is being taught as empirical science, and creation not at all.

Creation is self-evident

We are told in Romans 1:19-21 that what we know about God is evident. Verse 20 says:

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

Yes, this verse does directly apply to our belief about origins. The passage goes on to say that people who choose not to believe in Biblical Creationism do not honor God and they worship the creature rather than the Creator (verse 25). Because of these beliefs, God turns these people over to the lusts of their hearts (verse 24). This turning over leads to hedonistic culture and a path paved with immorality. The emerging slogan for such a culture was popular decades ago and simply stated, “If it feels good, do it!”

Confusion in the classroom and pulpit

The Bible says in Psalms 11:3: “When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” In the 21st century, the Theory of Evolution has unleashed a catastrophic blow to the very foundation of Christianity—the Word of God. The reality of how this “theory” plays out is that on Sunday mornings churches around the world teach that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and that it is true in every chapter and every verse—beginning with Genesis 1:1.

Then on Monday mornings classrooms around the world teach that everything evolved by natural causes, without any supernatural intervention (translation: NO GOD). The classrooms play one-upmanship in that they claim to have the real documented facts—the truth. They present artistic charts on the evolution of man from a hunched over ape to an upright walking Cro Magnon. Unknowingly, teachers rely on their textbooks that contain well-documented errors and hoaxes, some over a 100-years-old, such as Haeckel’s embryos! Trusting students are led to believe that the fossil record supports these charts and their claims.

On the other hand, the churches also claim to teach the truth, but with rare exception, do not present authoritative-looking or well-informed arguments to support their claims. They have not followed the Apostle Paul’s commitment of “destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God…” 2 Cor. 10:5. The sad truth is that the growing body of empirical evidence supports the Genesis account in many instances, but this truth is not reaching the Body of Christ sitting in the pews across America and the rest of the world.

So, what is the student supposed to think? Barna Research conducted a poll quite some time ago revealing that 70% of students entering high school and college claiming to be Christians plan to leave the church when they graduate directly due to teachings about evolution. Their statistic tells us what the students think. Recent statistics from not as well-documented sources reveal disturbingly higher numbers.

From Anaximander to Darwin and beyond

Alas, there is nothing new under the sun. The Greeks were the first to believe in evolution, but it was Charles Darwin that gave the theory a boost in the mid-1800s. While this theory has been gaining substantial ground for well over a century, it has also influenced the thinking of many historical figures as well. The most notable would be Karl Marx, Joseph Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, and Adolf Hitler. These men were vocal supporters of evolution and consequently felt perfectly free to choose what was right in their own eyes. Unfortunately, what was right in their own eyes led to shocking levels of tyranny and human depravity. Hitler justified his treatment of Jews and Blacks as sub humans worthy of genocide because he believed they were lower on the evolutionary chain.

Should their behavior really surprise us? The answer is a bold and astounding NO! Marx, Stalin, Mao, and Hitler gave us a glimpse of what life looks like without God and His moral code. They gave us a glimpse of how man chooses what he believes to be right in his own eyes when God is eliminated from his thought process. Proverbs 16:25 states, “There is a way that seems right to man, but in the end it leads to death.” The history of the 20th century certainly seems to support this verse: genocide, abortion, and lifestyles leading to AIDS, to name a few advocated rights that lead to death. We need to ask ourselves, is this what life without God looks like? To answer that question for yourself, read Romans 1:28-32.

The creation debate today

In today’s Darwinian culture, those of us believing in Biblical Creationism are scorned and laughed at as if we were some medieval illiterate clinging to old wives tales and ill-contrived fables. The good news is that strong and faithful men and women are standing up and sharing facts that support Genesis, understanding that:

  • If we believe in evolution, it is illogical to believe in creationism.
  • If we don’t believe in creationism, then why should we believe anything else in the Bible?
  • If we don’t believe the Bible, why should we believe God?
  • If we don’t believe in God, why should we employ His moral codes?
  • And if we don’t employ His moral codes, then we are free to decide for ourselves what is right and what is wrong.

Deciding for ourselves is what we have been doing. Deciding for ourselves has filled our prisons, killed our unborn, and given rise to one of the deadliest diseases mankind has ever known. Evolution may be the greatest and most successful lie since the serpent told Eve ‘You can be like God.’ Make no mistake about it, evolution is an assault on the very foundation of Biblical Creationism; therefore, it is an assault on the Bible and the existence of God.

Here are two questions to consider:

  1. Can Christianity survive in a world where the Bible is nothing more than a fable?
  2. Will there be faith on the earth when the Son of Man returns?

You see, you can’t have it both ways. If evolution is true, then the Bible is just a myth; but if the Bible is true, then evolution is a fallacy. The challenges of the 21st century demand that you decide what you believe. Those who keep silent have made their decision. Christ says that a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand, and He says that those who do not stand with Him stand against Him, Matthew 12:25, 30. Every person must decide for themselves where they stand.
