Ebola: inadequate response

Ebola

The Obama administration did not stop Ebola from reaching American shores. Now it is not doing what it should to stop Ebola from spreading more widely. One class of citizens took matters into their own hands last night. All Americans must now do the same.

The government pretends to fight Ebola…

Ebola

An Ebola virion. Colorized transmimssion electron micrograph by Cynthia Goldsmith, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

CNAV went over what Ebola is earlier. Yesterday the first patient to contract Ebola while in America, died. Before he died, the country saw a comedy of errors (like someone hosing down the patient’s vomitus into a storm drain).

That comedy of errors goes on. Four examples will serve:

  1. Yesterday Mr. Jeh Johnson (sic), Secretary of Homeland Security, and Dr. Tom Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), admitted that one hundred fifty passengers a day step off planes in the USA after starting from Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. The Ebola outbreak affects these countries worst of all. Some of these take two flights, or more, to come here. (Thomas Duncan did.) That’s worse. That’s two cockpit crews, cabin crews, and ground cleaning crews that must serve aboard, or clean, a “sick plane.”
  2. Also yesterday, the head of the Africa Command said those 3,000 U.S. service members would come into contact, not with Ebola patients, but only with blood samples. Only from blood samples? Your editor used to administer laboratories in a 250-bed community hospital. Those samples, all in one spot, make the laboratory more dangerous, square foot for square foot, than any of those patients’ rooms. Only if the patient goes wild will the patient pose a greater danger to a caretaker than does a blood sample pose to the technician who handles it. Not to mention the problem of cleaning the auto-analyzer afterward – and what happens if a sample tube breaks inside a centrifuge?
  3. The CDC advises flight attendants to watch for any passenger using the restroom too often. Excuse me? That’s why you make sure no flight from a stricken area even gets off the ground!
  4. And how does the CDC plan to screen people? By (are you ready for this?) asking them to self-declare their symptoms. How does Dr. Frieden think Thomas Duncan finagled seats on flights to bring him from Liberia to Texas? He lied! Does Dr. Frieden seriously expect desperate would-be quarantine breakers to tell the truth in writing about not feeling so well?

Oh-hh, puh-leeeeeeeze. And the government wonders why some people think de facto President Obama deliberately wants to see Ebola on our shores, so he can:

  • Lead the American people to beg him, “Save us! Save us!” as if he were the Second Coming (or some kind of African tribal shaman),
  • Postpone the midterm elections to a moment he and the Democratic Party might think more auspicious, or even
  • Let white Americans die as payback for slavery.

Somehow the thought our fellow travelers elected a monumental screw-up as President, not once but twice, seems just as bad as, or worse than, one of those three nefarious (but still speculative) motives.

…and the people respond

But maybe now certain segments of the American population have had enough.

Yesterday the union of the workers who clean airliner cabins after those planes land, went on strike at La Guardia Airport. They specifically raised the issue of having to clean out a “sick airplane” and not knowing which fight might have had an Ebola sufferer on board. Those cleaners do not have even the proper gloves and other protective gear to clean a cabin where someone flew when he had the ‘flu! Now the Port Authority wanted them to risk contracting Ebola?!? Nothing doing! they cried. (And today the Port Authority listened.)

And again as CNAV mentioned earlier, Hallelujah Acres assembled their own kit, and developed their own protocol, to support not only an Ebola sufferer but also his caretakers. CNAV expects other alternative-medicine practitioners and purveyors to do the same. (An earlier version of the protocol also recommended that an Ebola sufferer take 150,000 IU per day of vitamin D3, and a caregiver 10,000 IU per day. CNAV suspects the FDA might have ordered Hallelujah Acres to stop that vitamin D recommendation and would not let them say why. Alternative-medicine practitioners already suspect that all Americans, and indeed all who live in temperate climates, are vitamin D deficient and should supplement their diet with oral vitamin D at 5,000 IU per day at least. But one practitioner recommends regular blood assays of vitamin D to help walk the line between healthy supplementation on one side, and poisoning on the other.)

Everyone in the federal government is acting like clowns with this Ebola outbreak. That would be funny were it not so dire. But what would happen if the union of airliner cleaners called a general strike? That might force the FAA to act, similarly to how it acted during the Gaza War but with far better reason. And if everyone had available an immune-boosting kit, and started to eat to support their immune systems instead of tearing them down, Ebola might not be nearly as fearsome – or as effective, if any of the rumors about Barack Obama’s motives turns out to be true.
