Recall NJ – a deafening silence

Senator Robert Menendez, who enjoys the protection of a sycophantic media

Since Recall NJ embarked on a campaign to recall Senator Robert Menendez that was thwarted by the NJ Supreme Court, many have wondered why the organization did not take an active role in defeating the incumbent NJ Senator this fall. The answer is simple. There was no one deserving of the organization’s support.

As founder and former president of Recall NJ, I can tell you first-hand that the über-liberal record of Senator Menendez is worth fighting against. However, his Republican opponent’s record as a state senator was not much better.

Menendez v. Kyrillos on the issues:

Abortion

Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ)

On the primary social issue of our day – abortion – Senator Menendez voted in favor of partial birth abortion, a form of abortion that many liberals find abominable. His Republican challenger, who claims to be pro-life, voted for a cloning bill that allowed for partial birth abortion. He also voted to start in New Jersey what is commonly called the “death panels” of Obamacare.

Immigration

Menendez is a known advocate of illegal immigration, re-labeling the law-breakers as “undocumented workers.” On the other hand, his Republican challenger consistently turned his head to the growing problem – even as New Jersey’s fastest growing sanctuary for illegals is in his own back yard. In the wake of the growing Hispanic demographic that arguably catapulted Barack Obama to a second term, the Republican Party is now reconsidering their inaction on the issue. But when they had the opportunity to support a primary candidate who had a good handle on the issue as well as a logical plan, they threw him under the bus in favor of the Governor’s hand-picked protégé. Their shortsightedness in this area alone may have cost them the senatorial election and showcases their rigidity.

Gun control

On the passionately held issue of gun control, Menendez not only supported NDAA but also promoted the UN Arms Trade Treaty. While his challenger is only a state representative and not a participant at the federal level, his abysmal record on gun control has earned him a “C” average from the NRA. This is shockingly low for a Republican representative and a fact that didn’t escape the eyes of many conservative voters.

Taxes

In today’s day and age where we are taxed to death and beyond, Menendez’ challenger sports another “C” rating, on this issue from Americans for Prosperity.

Whither Recall NJ?

Senator Menendez and his ilk may be asking “what happened to Recall NJ during the November campaign?” He surely must have geared up for a statewide challenge from the organization. Well, Recall NJ can only offer a question in response: What was the Republican Party thinking in running a candidate such as they did? The answer is once again a simple one. The candidate was a good friend of Governor Christie.

And there you have it in a nutshell: not only the reason Recall NJ didn’t take an active role in the senatorial campaign but also the reason the Republican Party in New Jersey is falling apart at the seams. Instead of vetting good candidates through an open primary system, the NJ cabal resorts to cronyism and bully politics. The Republican Party in NJ may truly believe that they must play to the state’s moderates and those who have come up through the ranks, but this practice will doom them to loss after loss. They mistakenly interpret the state’s growing unaffiliated voters as moderates when in fact they represent a growing majority of disenfranchised conservatives who rightfully have left the Party umbrella. Governor Christie may be a bit of a rock star to the rest of the country but voting results have proven that his coat tails are short here in New Jersey. But what can you expect from the only state in the Union not to adopt the Republican Platform? More moderates, more lost opportunities, and a growing third party movement.
